North Somerset Council’s bid to the Coastal Communities Fund for proposed developments at the Tropicana in Weston to establish it as a local and regional events venue has been unsuccessful.
The council had bid for £1 million to fund improvements to the outside ‘arena’ and a boosted capacity of 8,500. Changes to the Bay Café and gallery were also planned.
Only 26 of the 61 shortlisted bids to Government. The council says that the bidding process has enabled them to develop comprehensive plans for the building which have the potential to be delivered in stages rather than as one major project. There are likely to be future opportunities to bid for funding through routes such as the Coastal Communities Fund that can be explored.
Disappointing.

The Bay Cafe..while staff are generally pleasant, they are not really on the ball. Every time iv’e been in there on a sunny day you have to request them to open the windows. Then it’s done a bit grudgingly. Most of the cafe’s on the front allow dogs in during the winter months. The cafe would be ideal to section off for a dog-friendly area. They could really up their business if they permitted dogs out of season. But because its Council Run,they are not bothered. And last but not least the newspapers disappear by 10 am? i think council staff are stealing them ?Nobody’s bothered about that either. Tara Payne
