The Government has announced a “stronger towns fund” to help grow the economy post-Brexit. Under the proposals, councils in the South West will have access to £33 million in funding – for the whole region – spread over seven years.

Local councillor Mike Bell said: “Any new funding is welcome, but the proposal is for an extra £33 million for the whole South West – and spread over seven years. To put that into context, North Somerset Council has cut spending by more than £100 million over the past 12 years.

“Towns like Weston, where our economy has traditionally been behind other areas and where we have real challenges with poverty and deprivation, would really benefit from the investment. But it needs to be on a much bigger scale than this.”
