Tree work at former Quarry

by mikebell on 10 January, 2019

Works to make a quarry safe get under way next week.

Wood Lane Quarry in Weston Woods has previously been used for forest school activities with children from nearby schools, but has been closed to the public since 2010, because of health and safety concerns over the rock face and the cost of making the site safe.

Now a lease has been agreed between North Somerset Council and forest school leader Louise Brogan and her outdoor play company Play Wild! which will see the quarry open again for supervised sessions. Play Wild! has successfully crowdfunded the money required to make the site safe using North Somerset’s crowdfunding portal, securing more than £16,000 of funding from over 70 individuals and organisations.

Work will begin next week to remove trees which are damaging the crest of the rock face, followed by the removal of loose rock from the face and other safety works. Species of tree to be removed include holm oak, ash and sycamore.

The tree works are expected to take at least a week to complete.
