The first ever Weston-super-Mare Central Ward Building Communities Conference took place yesterday and was hailed a great success by organisers.
The event took place at Victoria Methodist Church Hall in Station Road yesterday, Wednesday 25th November, and was attended by more than 60 local residents and representatives of local organisations and volunteer groups.
The event had been organised by North Somerset Council, Healthwatch North Somerset, Voluntary Action North Somerset and ward councillor Mike Bell.
Participants heard about the council’s latest plans for the regeneration of Weston town centre and about successful community development projects that had taken place in neighbouring South Ward.
Discussion groups developed ideas about measures needed to improve health and wellbeing in the town centre area and identified dozens of events, activities and organisations already active in the community.
North Somerset Councillor Mike Bell said: “I am hugely grateful to everyone who took the time to come along to the event, which was a great success.
“This is just the beginning of our joint effort to build a stronger community in Weston Central and to make things happen. I am absolutely determined that residents will play a key role in shaping the future of our community and will set the priorities.
“We’re already beginning to plan the next steps and the next event to build upon the momentum. If any residents would like to be involved, I’d be pleased to hear from them.”
