Council sells of more than £6 million in assets

by mikebell on 5 March, 2019

A new report shows that in the last four years, Conservative-run North Somerset Council has sold off more than 50 pieces of land or property, for a total of £6.7 million. Some of these sales have been about getting a better deal for residents, some have been a result of service cuts and closures (e.g. libraries) and some have been empty or surplus space.

Sites of interest include:

? Locking Road car park for £2.5 million
? The William Knowles Centre for £1 million
? Worle Library for £260,000
? Weston Central Library for £250,000
? The Winter Gardens for £1

Councillor Mike Bell said: “What I think this report does show is that the council’s control a lot of land and make decisions all the time about what to buy and sell. These decisions are usually made behind closed doors and there often isn’t the transparency and openness there should be. There are many reasons for land disposals, some of them perfectly sound, but taxpayers and local residents should expect to be told about them and consulted on the options.”

The report was the result of some great investigation by Huffington Post and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and you can read more here: https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/…/sold-from-under-you-inte…
