A giant beach windmill gifted to Weston-super-Mare from global graffiti artist Banksy, following the Dismaland pop-up “bemusement park” in 2015, is to be displayed in the town centre thanks to a cash injection of £50k from the Government’s Coastal Revival Fund.
The Government’s announcement will allow the council to move the windmill from storage to the town centre, securing Banksy’s legacy for Weston-super-Mare.
The seven-metre-high windmill will be refurbished and relocated to the Italian Gardens with a future programme of on-going community engagement and activities.
The windmill will be moved to its new home over the next few months in time for the summer season. It will join a host of works within the town centre including public realm improvements taking place on South Parade and a future bus interchange at Alexandra Parade.
Weston was one of the first places in the country to be awarded Heritage Action Zone status and is the only one in the West of England. There are now 18 Heritage Action Zones in villages, towns and cities across England.
