A town reinventing itself

by mikebell on 26 February, 2020

Weston-super-Mare is a town “reinventing itself for the 21st century” with “ambitious plans for the future”.

This is the view of assessors who visited the town in November following a joint submission for Purple Flag status by North Somerset Council and the Weston Business Improvement District (BID).

As a result of the assessment Weston has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag for the fifth consecutive year in recognition of its safe and diverse evening and night-time economy.

The national accreditation scheme recognises towns that provide a vibrant mix of night-time entertainment while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

The assessors rated Weston “above standard” in all five criteria needed to gain Purple Flag status. Their report states:

“The town centre had a very nice feel to it and it was evident that much work has been done to ensure the image of the town centre is perceived as best as can be.

“Recent online surveys have shown that people feel safe visiting Weston and the perception is that it is becoming a safe place for a night out due to the various initiatives across the night-time economy.

“The Dolphin Square area was well worthy of note with a relaxed atmosphere that had appeal to the families dining there. Redevelopments are taking place and further schemes are planned that will further enhance the evening and night-time economy.

“The new changes to the Alexandra Parade area will be a welcome improvement and plans for the implementation of this are well advanced. The future pedestrianisation of areas of the town centre will further enhance the feel and ambience of the town centre.”

The assessors concluded: “The town would clearly have a buzz about it during the summer season. The potential for any visitor who was here for the first time is clear to see.”

Weston will officially receive its Purple Flag accreditation at an awards ceremony in Canterbury on 28 April.
