Shoppers in Weston-super-Mare will be able to enjoy some free parking in the run-up to the festive season for the first time in some council-run car parks.

This will apply on five Saturday afternoons from 2pm to 6pm starting from 23 November. The free parking offer will apply to Carlton Street and Grove car parks on Saturday afternoons from 2pm until 6pm from Saturday 23rd November to 21st December inclusive. After this time, visitors are able to purchase a parking ticket through the MiPermit app without having to return to their vehicle, or with cash at parking machines for just £1.50 for the evening.

In addition, car parking will be free in the Sovereign Centre from 3pm on late night shopping Thursdays from 28th November to Thursday 19th December inclusive.

Cllr Mike Bell, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Weston-super-Mare Central Ward said: “We all know that high streets across the country are having a tough time of it at the moment as shopping habits change and we want to support our local businesses. This is in response to meetings and discussions with local retailers and we are therefore pleased to offer some free parking in the run-up to Christmas to our residents and visitors.

“This is just one of a number of initiatives we’re working on to drive new life into the town centre. These include holding more events, improving the street scene and action to encourage landlords to let empty space.

“It’s not perfect, but this is a start. However, these ideas may not generate opportunities if people don’t shop locally, so please support local businesses this festive season if you possibly can.”
