Anyone for tennis?

by mikebell on 11 November, 2019

The three dilapidated tennis courts at Ashcombe Park in Weston-super-Mare are to be refurbished and brought back into use.

North Somerset Council has secured a Sport England Community Assets grant of £40,000 to match fund the section 106 developer contributions identified by the council to improve the courts.

Work on the £85,000 project is due to start next spring. It will include a total resurface of the three courts, new fencing and an automated gate access system which will enable users to book the courts online.

Annual memberships will also be available and more information on this will be released in the spring. Once open, the courts will also offer opportunities for tennis coaching.

The project is fully supported by the Lawn Tennis Association, who have worked with the council on proposals.

News of the project has been welcomed by Liberal Democrat councillors John Crockford-Hawley and Mark Canniford.

“Both Mark and I are delighted that, after so many years of neglect, the Ashcombe Park tennis courts are finally going to be refurbished to a high standard,” said Cllr Crockford-Hawley. “The council has worked hard to find the funding to bring this scheme forward.

“Encouraging greater use of this restored sports facility will be of tremendous benefit to the health and well-being of local residents.”
