It’s not you…it’s them! Break up with smoking this Stoptober

by mikebell on 19 September, 2019

Smokers in North Somerset are being urged to use the wide range of support available in the area to ‘split up’ with smoking this October when a national stop smoking campaign begins.

Stoptober is Public Health England’s national stop smoking campaign which runs every October. It challenges smokers to stop smoking for 28 days as research shows people are five times more likely to ditch cigarettes for good if they can stop smoking for 28 days.

Smokefree North Somerset offers free support to give smokers the best chance of ditching cigarettes. The team have supported thousands of people to quit and have also trained advisors in GP surgeries and pharmacies.

A range of free support options is available across North Somerset including the Stoptober app, a Facebook messenger bot, Stoptober Facebook online communities, daily emails and online Personal Quit Plan tool. Smokefree North Somerset also runs a number of informal, drop-in sessions to support smokers who want to quit:

  • Tuesdays, 5pm to 7pm at Morrisons Café in Locking Castle, Weston-super-Mare
  • Wednesdays 1pm to 2pm at Bristol Road Baptist Church, Weston (please arrive for 12.30pm if it’s your first session)
  • Wednesdays, 6pm to 7.30pm at the Tesco café, Station Road, Weston
  • Plus, the Health Trainers have appointments available at the Town Hall in Weston, Monday to Friday, and at Castlewood in Clevedon on Friday mornings. They provide support on a range of health issues, including stopping smoking.

Cllr Mike Bell, the council’s executive member with responsibility for health, said: “Stoptober is a great time to give up smoking and be supported through the process.

“Smokefree North Somerset offer expert face-to-face support as well as the most effective, proven techniques for stopping smoking. They can help you find the type of support that’s right for you – whether that’s nicotine gum, patches, mouth spray, prescription medication, apps or other support.

“If you want to make 2019 the year you stop smoking then get in touch with Smokefree North Somerset today.”
