Council takes no action on fly tipping

by mikebell on 22 March, 2019

Councillor Mike Bell reports: “I don’t think anybody would be surprised to learn that fly tipping and rubbish is a problem in Weston and North Somerset. However, you might be surprised to learn that it appears that the council does very little about it. These figures show that last year the council investigated no incidents of fly tipping, issued no penalty notices and really did very little little to tackle this issue.

“I’m really disappointed by this because I have to say in my own experience council officers are very attentive when you report problems. The problem is that the Conservatives have cut street cleaning budgets, removed bins, introduced charges at the tip, not resourced enforcement and not supported volunteer groups enough. Coupled with an antisocial minority who litter, and you can see why there is a problem.

“After 12 years of Conservative rule at the council, it’s time to shake things up and get some fresh ideas in. I proposed an amendment to the council budget, rejected by the Conservatives unfortunately, which called for:

✅ more street cleaning

✅ improved recycling services

✅ a Green Action Team to tackle hotspots

✅ extra funding and support for community volunteer litter picks and clean ups

✅ an annual ‘spring clean’ week, including a free bulky waste and recycling collection for every street

“We proposed that this be funded by cutting councillors allowances and levying extra council tax on empty homes.”
