Heritage volunteer project to receive cash injection

by mikebell on 10 March, 2019

Ever wondered what North Somerset looked like 100 years ago? Or wondered how your town has changed?

An exciting digital mapping programme, Know your Place, has been given a boost after being awarded £10,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. As part of the Great Weston Heritage Action Zone, the cash injection will create an improved volunteer project, with a team of ‘super volunteers’ whose aim it is to work with the local community and unearth historical gems from North Somerset’s history.

Working with Weston Museum, Weston Town Council, Historic England and the Heritage Action Zone, the programme will now have the resources to add their collection of local heritage information to the Know Your Place website which if freely available to members of the public.

Know Your Place, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, is an ambitious online mapping project that overlays maps from various periods of history, allowing users to compare how streets or areas look today alongside maps from the past.

The Heritage Action Zone is part of the Weston Town Centre Regeneration Programme which is delivering improvements to key sites within the town and encouraging inward investment.

Weston was one of the first places to be awarded Heritage Action Zone status. There are now 18 Heritage Action Zones in villages, towns and cities across England.
