Back to business after Icescape fire

by mikebell on 28 November, 2018

Within a day of last week’s fire, which saw the Bare Grills catering unit at Icescape go up in flames, the seafront attraction was back in business and welcoming people through its doors.

With the lead-up to Christmas being one of the busiest times of the year for the popular Weston venue, the teams wasted no time in getting the building operational again.

As safety in the arena was assessed, the Bay Café, located at the front of the Tropicana, reopened on Saturday morning and events booked-in over the weekend in the indoor space of the venue went ahead as planned. Icescape staff quickly cleared the fire debris enabling them to open the ice rink, slide and fair rides on Sunday.

Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Bell said: “After a fantastic response from staff at Icescape, the Avon Fire and Rescue Service and council personnel, it’s amazing that ice skating is back on in Weston. The Icescape team, in particular, have worked very hard to get things going quickly again and I’m sure we’re all glad to have them in our town.”

Icescape, the South West’s largest undercover ice rink which has taken up residency in the venue’s outdoor arena since mid-October, raised the alarm regarding a fire that is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault from a piece of catering equipment in the Bare Grills kitchen unit.

Icescape staff raised the alarm around 5pm on Friday afternoon and quickly evacuated the venue. First light on Saturday morning revealed just how successful Avon Fire and Rescue Service were in being able to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further into the site and the Tropicana building.

Monday (26 November) saw Santa’s Grotto and the Lodge bar re-open, with Bare Grills expected to be operational again by the end of the week.

All events booked at the Tropicana remain unaffected and will go ahead as planned. Find out what’s coming up by visiting the venue’s website www.tropicanaweston.co.uk.
