Helping people live safely and independently

by mikebell on 1 October, 2018

Older and more vulnerable residents in North Somerset are set to benefit with the launch of a new handy person service provided by North Somerset Council.

The service, which launched at the beginning of October, will carry out repairs, maintenance, improvements, adaptations and other ‘odd jobs’ to help people live safely and independently in their own homes.

It is available to anyone aged 60 or over, or who has a disability and is unable to carry out the work themselves.

The handy person service is being provided by AMS Electrical, a local company with many years of experience carrying out such work.

As well as the launch of the new service, North Somerset Council has also taken over the running of the equipment and demonstration centre based in the Motex building on Winterstoke Road, Weston-super-Mare.

The centre provides professional support, help and advice about social care, equipment needs and home adaptations. A range of equipment is available for people to ‘try before they buy’ with staff on hand to talk through the different options available, including professional help such as occupational therapy.

To access the handy person service call 01934 520 116. The equipment centre is currently undergoing a refurbishment and is open for appointments,. It will reopen fully next Wednesday (10 October), and will be open 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm on Saturdays. You can call in to the equipment and demonstration centre at any time to have a look at what’s available and speak to staff. Find out more at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/handypersonservice.

Read this article with interest. A really good idea, until I accessed the web site to see what was available. The charge is £15.60 per hour this is okay, however maximum time is 3 hours with a maximum of 6 hours per year. Many of the services offered probably could be done in 3 hours but some services if done properly may well take longer. Also what is the good of 6 hours per year. During a year many of these vulnerable people may well need quite a few small but necessary jobs done. This is a really great idea I and I have said for some time there is a real need for this kind of service given by reputable and safe providers for older people in the community. I say again great idea but 6 hours a year is not really enough,
