Councillor Mike Bell visited residents at Abbey Gate Care Home on Beach Road this week to support a campaign for national Dementia Awareness Week.

Together with North Somerset Community Partnership NHS Trust and children from Honey Tree Nursery, Abbey Gate had a party to mark dementia awareness week and highlight the needs of people suffering from memory loss conditions.

As part of the event, children from the nursery helped to decorate zimmer frames and other walking aids with the residents.

Mike said: “It was a fantastic event and it was great to see the interaction between the residents and the children. There is some evidence that people with dementia find it difficult to recognise their grey-coloured walking aids and that decorating them in this interactive way helps to improve memory – and reduce falls as a result.”
