Students to develop design guide for Weston heritage work

by mikebell on 14 May, 2018

Students from the University of the West of England (UWE) are working with the Weston-super-Mare Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) to develop a design guide for changes to streets and shop frontages in Weston.

The four students, who are studying Architecture and Planning BA (hons), have been asked to develop a draft design guide for the natural and built fabric of the town centre streets and shop frontages in the High Street and Orchard Meadows areas of Weston.

Cara McMahon, Heritage Project Officer at North Somerset Council, tells us more: “We are delighted to have UWE students working on this exciting project. To help with the creative process, we’ve based ourselves in Weston’s creative hub, The Stable. Based within a conservation area The Stable is the perfect place to start our design guide.”

Dr Sonia Dragojlovic-Olivera, a senior lecturer in Architecture and the Built Environment department at UWE said: “We are pleased to be working with the Heritage Action Zone scheme in Weston to consider how the town centre could benefit from enhancement. For the students it is an opportunity to get some experience working on a practical project that could be used to inform future development. The Stable facilities are a perfect location for the students to experience running their own project.”

There are now 18 Heritage Action Zones in villages, towns and cities across England. They have been identified by Historic England as places where the historic environment can create economic growth and improve quality of life for people.

Kerry O’Neill, manager of The Stable, said: “Our bright and contemporary shared spaces are perfect for encouraging creative thought processes. Our private offices – one of which the students have temporarily taken over – are available to rent by members and non-members alike of our town’s new creative hub.”

The Heritage Action Zone is part of the Weston Town Centre Regeneration Programme that is delivering improvements to key development sites and positively encouraging investment within the town.

The vision for the town centre is focused around the themes of living, learning and lifestyle, with plans to attract more people to live in the town centre creating a lively university town which will further improve the local economy.
