Potholes everywhere!

by mikebell on 26 April, 2018

We’ve received lots of complaints about potholes in local roads, especially after the poor winter weather.

Cllr Mike Bell said: “Just on a short 10 minute walk around the Whitecross and Ellenborough areas, I photographed numerous examples of poor road conditions. I’ve reported them all for action.

“The problem is that the council just doesn’t spend enough on maintenance and doesn’t do the best long term fix, first time. As a result we see a slow deterioration of the conditions on many roads and pavements.”

This is the council’s pothole policy:

A pothole is a sharp-edged hole usually created by water, weather damage, or heavy vehicles.

For us to repair them, a pothole must be more than 4cm deep and 30cm across in the road, or deeper than 2cm and more than 15cm across on a pavement. A dangerous pothole is one in the road that exceeds these dimensions and is in a location likely to cause a vehicle to lose control.

We aim to investigate potholes on roads and pavements within 24 hours of being told about them. Where necessary, we will carry out emergency repairs to make dangerous potholes safe, and aim to repair 95% of other holes within 28 days.

Not all defects are potholes and we won’t repair those that don’t meet our intervention levels, but we will continue to monitor them and arrange repairs when they do.

Have you seen the potholes in Earlham Grove by the roundabout? More like sink holes!!!

  2. Christine Balson says:

Quantock Road has a number of potholes which are growing in size due to the continuing use of the road as a ‘rat run’.
