North Somerset Council is proposing to permanently change the speed limit to 20mph along roads in Orchard Meadows, Weston-Super-Mare.
Councillor Mike Bell said: “This is something that, together with businesses, I highlighted last year, so I am very pleased to see this.
“The fact is that in most urban areas, 20 is plenty. If a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle at 20mph they have a 97% chance of survival. We know that lower speeds in town centres help to create safer streets and more vibrant communities where people can live, work and shop.
“I’d like to see 20mph zones created much more widely across the town centre area to show that ours is a town centre that is genuinely pedestrian-friendly.”
