Developers have submitted an amended planning application for the former TJ Hughes building in High Street.

The plans have seen the removal of 21 student bedsits to make way for more retail space.

Cllr Mike Bell said: “The removal of the 21 student lets and replacement with extra first floor retail is a definite improvement and show that the developer is listening to local concerns.

“With the opening of Dolphin Square, this part of the High Street, along with St James Street, should become a really vibrant area and the opportunities to attract new retailers must be strong.

“The right mix of uses for our town centre buildings is important, but more crucial is that they are in active use and not standing empty.”
