The carnival is coming to town

by mikebell on 1 November, 2017

Glittering illuminated floats, marching bands, fancy dress walkers and entertainers will wind their way through Weston-super-Mare town centre on Friday 10 November with thousands of visitors expected to descend on the town to watch the annual carnival procession.

The start of the procession route has changed slightly this year due to changes in the road layout at the end of Alexandra Parade. The procession will start as usual at Locking Road car park at 7.15pm, turn left at the roundabout onto Locking Road and then right into Alfred Street.

From there it will then turn left onto the Boulevard, go along Waterloo Street and South Parade before turning left at the Cabot Court Hotel onto the seafront (Royal Parade). After parading along the seafront it will turn into Carlton Street before finishing outside the Town Hall.

A number of road closures and waiting restrictions will be in place as Weston gets ready for the carnival. The following town centre roads will close at 6pm on carnival night:

Francis Fox Way, Locking Road, Regent Street, Alexandra Parade, Alfred Street, Baker Street to the Jubilee Road junction (for emergency access), the Boulevard, Waterloo Street, South Parade, Knightstone Road (South Parade to Royal Parade), Royal Parade, Marine Parade, Beach Road, Carlton Street, Walliscote Grove Road, Walliscote Road (Walliscote Grove Road to Station Road), Station Road and Hildesheim Bridge (parking restrictions on Sunnyside Road North).

Once the roads are closed there will be no vehicle access to the town centre. No waiting cones will be displayed during the morning and will be enforced. On-street pay and display machines on the carnival route will be turned off from 2pm to ensure valid parking is only available until 4pm. Parking charges on all other streets will apply as normal.

All vehicles should be removed from the procession route by 4pm. After this any vehicle parked on no waiting cones could be issued with a parking fine and, if considered to be causing an obstruction, will be towed away.

A car park will operate on the Beach Lawns on the day. Anyone using the town centre car parks – Carlton Street, Tesco, Sovereign Centre, Royal Hotel, Sands car park and the NCP – or parking on streets inside the road closures will not be able to leave until the procession has finished.

Locking Road car park will be closed to the public from 6pm on Sunday 5 November until around noon on Saturday 11 November to accommodate the carnival floats.

The committee who organise the carnival are on the lookout for volunteers. If you would like to help as a marshal on the night please email terry.gilbert@nsea.biz.
