Parking – more work needed to get it right

by mikebell on 13 June, 2017

Local councillors Mike Bell and Robert Payne have been inundated with comments about the parking situation. Despite the return of parking wardens, the situation doesn’t seem to have improved for many people – and for some it has got worse.

Councillor Mike Bell said: “The parking situation is a real concern at the moment and is dominating my postbag and inbox. Fairly or not, the new parking wardens are perceived to be heavy-handed and there is a valid view from residents and traders that their needs have not been thought about.

“I have always been clear that we need cheaper off-street parking charges to encourage people to park in car parks, some free parking on-street to encourage shoppers and visitors, and a fair residents permit for people who live here, especially in the pay and display zone.

“There are no perfect solutions because there are simply more cars than spaces available. But it should be possible to develop an approach that gives people a fair and affordable chance to park near their home or place of work.

“The council’s parking strategy is shrouded in mystery and seems very incremental rather than offering step change. New car parks won’t solve the problem on their own, unless the charging regime is fair. The council needs to show that it is working with residents and businesses and not against them on this.

“In addition, we’ve heard precious little about reducing car dependency in Weston. Options around a park and ride, improved town centre cycling and bus provision and a safer and cleaner walking environment are all important elements too.”
