Council presses ahead with next phase of Dolphin Square

by mikebell on 4 October, 2016

North Somerset Council is pressing ahead with plans for the next phase of the Dolphin Square redevelopment by looking for World-class architects to design a new residential and mixed-use development.

The council is working with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the Government’s housing investment body, to bring forward the development of the site which includes the land in between the Dolphin Square development and the Premier Inn, the site of the former Sands nightclub and the Oxford Corner café.

This large and prominent site has been earmarked for around 180 new high quality homes together with ground floor commercial/retail space.

Councillor Mike Bell said: “Providing new good quality homes in the town centre is vital to helping to create a vibrant and diverse town centre with a thriving economy.

“Attracting more people to live in the heart of the town will bring new spending power, boosting the demand for shops and services, creating new jobs and developing a more vibrant town centre all year round.

“However, the council must consult residents more about its plans. It is not good enough to take decisions behind closed doors and then ‘announce’ the results. Local people have every right to have a stake in the future of their town and the council cannot just rely on technical planning applications at a later date as the primary means of consultation.”

The Council and the HCA also control vacant land at Sunnyside Road and Locking Road Car Park which is a further major development opportunity, for which architectural services will also be sought in the next few weeks. This development will help to create an improved ‘gateway’ to the town centre around the station area.

Parking must be provided for any developement of housing.
Big mistake to put housing on locking Road car park. It is needed for public parking, there is currently insufficient space for vistors on many occasions and we need visitors.
